- WAVES; Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Services "WAVES"; the US Naval Reserve Women's branch, established July 21, 1942, to replace men stationed ashore to provide more sea duty sailors and officers; by the end of 1942 there were 770 WAVES officers and 3,109 enlisted; by 1945 there were 8,475 officers and 73,816 enlisted; many WAVES were demobilized after the War [WWII]; the Women's Armed Services Integration Act in 1948 allowed women to serve in the regular Navy; the term WAVES continued in usage for Navy women until the 1970s; "Made and sold under authority of U.S. Navy, W.A.V.E.S.", embroidered label with anchor, in image ( (Naval History and Heritage Command website, viewed December 8, 2025) )
