  • Kentucky encyclopedia, ©1992:pages 797-798 (Susan Clay Sawitzky, poet and art historian, born July 21, 1897 in Frankfort, Ky. Attended Miss Ella Williams' School, then briefly attended Sayre School, Transylvania University and University of Kentucky. Her early poems and stories appeard in "Town and Country Magazine" and "New York Times" and in 1923 the book "Poems by Susan Clay" was published. On May 27, 1927, fleeing family interference, she eloped with Russian-born New York art dealer William Sawitzky. She then pioneered research on early American art with her husband, publishing articles on several artists. Died on July 11, 1981.)
