- Chicago tribune WWW site, viewed July 5, 2017(in obituary dated July 2, 2017: Janet Meakin Poor; took a leadership role with the Chicago Botanic Garden; her vision focused on conservation, research and the value of plant diversity, subjects she explored in two books; Poor, 87, died June 21 in Evanston Hospital; had lived in the same house in Winnetka for 50 years; born Janet Meakin Lee in Cincinnati; took courses at Triton College in River Grove and at the University of Wisconsin-Madison to earn a degree in landscape design and horticulture; married Edward Poor in Cincinnati in 1951 and moved with him to Chicago in 1957; job transfers later took the family to several other Midwest cities before a return to Chicago in 1967; in the late 1960s, she began a landscape design business; did her last job, a small garden in Winnetka, about a year ago; became a member of the Chicago Botanic Garden about the time it began in the late 1960s; in 1978, she joined the woman's board and in 1980 joined the board of directors; served as board chair from 1987 to 1993; for more than 20 years, beginning in 1980, she chaired the Botanic Garden's Research Committee, now known as the Science and Education Committee; recently worked on the Buildings, Gardens and Visitor Experience Committee0
