  • Email from Kenneth Woods, artistic director, English Symphony Orchestra, July 28, 2017("... since the 1980's the ESO has been one organization with two names. It was founded as the English String Orchestra and continues to use that name for string orchestra works. As the orchestra took on a wider repertoire and added a permanent wind and brass section, it also adapted the name English Symphony Orchestra. The situation continues in that way today.... Anything of ours that is string orchestra only is usually treated as English String Orchestra, anything with winds (with or without strings) English Symphony Orchestra. There are examples, such as our recent recording of new violin concertos on Nimbus, where both names are used on the same CD. In that case, four works are credited to English String Orchestra and one to English Symphony Orchestra. Under no circumstances do we ever credit a performance to English String Orchestra/English Symphony Orchestra. It is always one or the other.")
