A founder of American ORT, member of World ORT Union Central Board, leader of the American Jewish Community, died in New York City on May 14th, 1969. A Vice President of American ORT Federation and Chairman of American Labor ORT, A. Held was associated with the Jewish Daily Forward from 1908 to 1917 and from 1962 until his retirement in 1962 as City Editor, General and Business Manager and President of the Forward Association. He had a second career an banking and labor, as president of the Amalgamated Bank (1925-1945) and as Director for many years of the health and welfare department of the International Ladies Garment Workers Union. He was for more than 30 years National Chairman for the Jewish Labor Committee. Adolph Held was a founder of the Joint Distribution Committee; In 1920 he was appointed European director of the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society (HIAS).
