Sent to "exact retribution from the Sioux" tribe near Laramie, Wyoming who had defended themselves against Lieutenant J. L. Grattan and his men. When he arrived he could not find this tribe and instead knowingly attacked a different group, a friendly village led by Chief Yellow Thunder at Ash Hollow.)

A cavalry officer in the US Army, who became known during the Indian Wars and the Mexican-American War for his brutality and ruthlessness. Murdered an enslaved woman in June 1834 but was acquitted in 1835. Served in the Confederate Army during the Civil War, retiring to St. Louis, Mo. in 1863. President Andrew Johnson appointed Harney to the Indian Peace Commission where he helped negotiate several treaties with multiple Native American nations. Harney then retired to Pass Christian, Mississippi, then moved to Orlando, Florida where he later died at his home.)
