He was commissioned by another British explorer and butterfly collector, John Henry Leech (1862-1900), to go up the Yangzi River and as far as possible into Tibet, though apparently he did not progress further than Tatsienlu. A.E. Pratt's plant introductions include Rhododendron prattii Franch., named in his honour)
