Sources of Information
- in a Feb. 15, 1997 article entitled, "The Three Sisters, Avenged: A Dominican Drama" (When the dictator Rafael Trujillo had the sisters Patria, Minerva and Maria Teresa Mirabal killed in 1960, he and his minions thought they were finally rid of a threat to both their power and their egos. But history and the Dominican people appear to have found a particularly apt, if somewhat belated, way to avenge their assassinations. ( (New York times online, 30 April 2018:) )
- The Mirabal sisters (Patria Mirabal, Minerva Mirabal, and María Teresa Mirabal). The Mirabal sisters, Las Hermanas Mirabal, were four sisters in the Dominican Republic, known commonly as Patria, Minerva, Maria Teresa, and Dedé, who opposed the dictatorship of Rafael Trujillo (El Chivo) and were involved in clandestine activities against his regime. Three of the four sisters (Patria, Minerva, Maria Teresa) were assassinated on 25 November 1960. The last sister, Dedé, died of natural causes on 1 February 2014. The assassinations transformed the Mirabal sisters into "symbols of both popular and feminist resistance." In 1999, in the sisters' honor, the United Nations General Assembly designated 25 November the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. ( (Wikipedia, 10 May 2018) )
