- "Prof. Lawrence Gushee and Dr. Charles Nolan, Archivist of the [New Orleans] Archdiocese, send details of an entry from the baptismal register of St. Joseph's Church, 1802 Tulane Avenue, New Orleans, which records that Ferdinand Joseph Lemott (LaMothe) was born on 20th October 1890 and baptized on 25th April 1891 [includes facsimile]. His parents were Edward Lemott (Edward J. LaMothe) and Louise Monett (Monette). Additional dates, principally that of 20th September 1890, for Jelly Roll Morton's birth have been examined, and these should be given due consideration. ... until Morton's birth certificate surfaces, the information from his baptismal certificate remains, for the time being, the best evidence of his birth date."
