- Encyclopedia of Holocaust literature, 2002:pages (Philip Mechanicus was born in the Netherlands in 1889, worked as a journalist beginning at age 17. Sent to the camp at Amersfoort November 7, 1942 where he was until March 8, 1944 when he was sent to Bergen-Belsen, then to Auschwitz on October 9. Based on the accounts of Auschwitz survivors, it appears that he was shot with a group of 120 other prisoners three days after arriving in Auschwitz [as early as October 12, 1944]. His diary is one of the most extensive accounts of a man's life in Holland's most infamous concentration camp, Westerbork.)
