James Pillans FRSE (1778–1864) was a Scottish classical scholar, Professor of Humanity at the University of Edinburgh, and educational reformer. He is credited with inventing the blackboard, alongside his colleague Jack Smart but more correctly was the inventor of coloured chalk.
