Sept. 19, 1841 in Kingston, Upper Canada; he was an early advocate of free trade and was elected to the Political Economy Club; he was elected for Dover in 1826 and in 1830 became vice-president of the Board of Trade and Treasurer of the Navy in the Whig administration; subsequently he transferred to Manchester, where he was elected without campaigning in 1832 and re-elected in 1834 and 1837; he served as president of the Board of Trade in 1835; on September 6, 1839 he was commissioned governor-in-chief of British North America, overseeing the 1840 Act of Union; he was elevated to the peerage as Baron Sydenham on August 19, 1840; he proclaimed the union on February 10, 1841; as his health deteriorated he submitted his resignation in July 1841)
