- Keith, Arthur Berriedale; born on 5 April 1879 at Portobello, Edinburgh; studied at Edinburgh University (1894-7), taking an MA there before going to Balliol College, Oxford, as classical scholar and Boden scholar (Sanskrit); entered into the Colonial Office as clerk, second class in October 1901 and served in several departments until 1914; in 1914 named regius professor of Sanskrit and comparative philology at Edinburgh University, a position he held for the rest of his life; wrote numerous publications that ranged across classics, Sanskrit language and literature, oriental philosophy and religion, constitutional law of England and of the British empire, history, geography, and international affairs in the fields of both law and diplomacy; lived at 4 Crawfurd Road, Edinburgh from 1920 until his death on 6 October 1944 at his home ( (Oxford Dictionary of National Biography, accessed September 26, 2018) )
