Tucker, 1904-1980; Archibald Normal ("Archie" Tucker; born in Cape Town on 10th March 1904; M.A. in phonetics from Cape Town University and a Ph.D. in the same subject from University College, London, under Daniel Jones and Alice Werner; D.Lit. from University College; in 1932 Tucker joined the staff of the School of Oriental and African Studies, where he remained, as Lecturer, Senior Lecturer, Reader, and ultimately as Professor of East African Languages, until his retirement 39 years later; he was closely associated with the International African Institute, a member of its Executive Council from 1950; he travelled many times to Africa, especially to the Sudan, Uganda, and Kenya, on research trips or advisory visits; in 1929-31 he served as linguistic expert on non-Arabic languages for the government of the Sudan; his major publications include The comparative phonetics of the Suto-Chuana group of Bantu languages (1929); A Luganda grammar (1954, coauthor); A Maasai grammar (with vocabulary (1955, coauthor); The non-Bantu languages of north-eastern Africa (1956, coauthor) ( (De Gruyter website, Journal of African languages and linguistics 2, 1980, page 141, viewed November 6, 2024:) )
