- Johan Rudolph Thorbecke, born January 14th, 1798 in Zwolle, died June 4th, 1872 in The Hague was a Dutch liberal statesman. Thorbecke is best known for heading the commission that drafted the revision of the Constitution of the Netherlands in 1848. He is generally considered a founding father of the modern political system of the Netherlands. Thorbecke began studying classical literature and philosophy in Amsterdam, studies he finished in Leiden in 1820. Later, in 1825 he became professor of Political Science at Ghent University. At Leiden University he worked as a professor of Diplomacy, Modern History, Law and Constitutional History (1831-1850). He served three terms as minister of the Interior, along with being Prime Minister of the Netherlands (1849-1853, 1862-1866 and 1871-1872) ( (English Wikipedia, viewed December 20th, 2023) )
