- page 276 (William Bullock died March 7, 1849 at his home at 14 Halsey Terrace, London. There is still some doubt about his age. The death certificate says 76, the burial register says 75; other resources give possible birth year as 1770, which would have made him 79 at death. ( (Costeloe, M. P. - William Bullock; naturalist and antiquary; baptized on May 8, 1773 at St Andrew's Church, Plymouth, Devon; by 1795 he was in Liverpool; in 1801, while trading as a jeweller and goldsmith, he published a descriptive catalogue of a museum which he had opened at 24 Lord Street in 1795; it contained works of art, armoury, objects of natural history and curiosities brought by Captain Cook from the south seas partially acquired from Richard Greene's Lichfield Museum and Sir Ashton Lever's collections; in 1809 he moved to London, where his collection, still called the Liverpool Museum, proved extremely popular until it was disposed of by auction in 1819; in December 1822, he went to Mexico and from his tour he brought home many valuable artefacts; after his return to England in November 1823, he opened an exhibition on ancient and modern Mexico; catalogues to the exhibition were published in 1824 and 1825; in 1824 he published Six months' residence and travels in Mexico, which was translated into French and Dutch; after disposing of his Mexican collection, partly to the British Museum, he returned to Mexico in 1825; back in Britain from 1827 to 1828, he then left for the USA, recording his tour in Sketch of a journey through the Western States of North America (1827) and buying land on the outskirts of Cincinnati, where his hopes to build a new town called Hygeia failed; he returned to England by 1840; he died at 14 Halsey Terrace, Chelsea, on March 7, 1849 ( (Oxford Dictionary of National Biography WWW site, viewed August 20, 2024) )
