  • Kentucky encyclopedia, ©1992:pages 840-841 (James Speed; born March 11, 1812 at Farmington, Ky.; graduated from St. Joseph's College in Bardstown, Ky., in 1828 and from Transylvania University with a degree in law in 1833. Established a law practice in Louisville, Ky.; served in the Kentucky House of Representatives 1847-1848 and in the Kentucky Senate 1861-1863; served in Union Army, and as law professor in University of Louisville Law School 1856-1858 and 1872-1879. Served as U. S. Attorney General December 1864-July 15, 1866. He died June 25, 1887.)
