Toward the beginning of her career, she used the hyphenated last name Szalit-Marcus, though she later shortened this to Szalit (initially her husband's last name). We follow her lead and give preference to the short form with which she signed most works produced after 1923. Born as Rahel Markus on 2 July 1888 in Telz, the Yiddish name for Telšiai (Tel'shi) in Russian Lithuania. Her birthdate has been erroneously given as 1892, 1894, or later. Her family relocated to Lodz (Poland) around 1900. She lived in Munich, Germany to study art from 1910 to 1914, using the name Rahel Marcus. Following the outbreak of World War I, she was expelled from Germany and fled with actor Julius Szalit to Vienna where they married in 1915. They separated prior to Julius's suicide in 1919. From 1916 to 1933, she lived in Berlin. She fled to Paris in 1933 when the Nazis took control of Germany. She was arrested in the Vel d'Hiv roundup in July 1942, deported, and murdered in the Auschwitz concentration camp on or around 22 August 1942. She possessed Polish citizenship during the final decades of her life, but spent most of her adult life in Germany and later France. She was a native Yiddish speaker, fluent in German, and also spoke and wrote in Polish and French)

Born Rahel Markus in Telz [Telsiai] in the Kovno region of Lithuania, then part of the Russian Empire, she was active in Berlin during the Weimar Republic and in Paris in the 1930s.
