- Ruppel, Berthold, died in 1494 (other year of death: 1495), was a German printer and bookseller, active in Basel from 1468-1494, Gutenberg's oldest journeyman in Mainz (Bechtolff von Hanauwe) and sided with Gutenberg in his dispute with Fust. Perhaps also in Strasbourg; thereafter the first printer in Basel, by 1468 at the latest a printer-publisher and book and paper merchant in Basel; initially wealthy, but in financial difficulties from 1478/79 onwards; From around 1480, he made his living from the book and paper trade, but apparently still worked with type provided to him by Johann Amerbach (printer of the Meffret Sermones, other name variants: Bechtolff von Hanauwe ; Ruppel, Bertoldus).
