Martini studied at the universities of Zurich, Graz, Heidelberg, Grenoble, and Berlin. Since 1943 he was professor of Aesthetics and Literature at the Technical University of Stuttgart. Martini was a member of the Presidium of the German Academy for Language and Literature.
