- Antoine Legrand (born 1629 in Douai, then Spanish Netherlands; died August 7, 1699 in London; also Antoine Le Grand or Antonius le Grand) was a Dutch friar and missionary and author of philosophical and theological works. ; Around 1649, Legrand joined the so-called Recollects, a reformist branch of the Franciscan order dedicated to missionary work and re-Catholicization. He received his education at the Saint Bonaventure convent in Douai, where he was appointed professor of philosophy in 1655. Legrand also worked in Douai at the Collège anglais, an educational institution for Catholic religious refugees from England. This activity led to him being sent on a mission to England in 1656. (...) In England, Legrand held positions within the order, but he was also a teacher of philosophy and theology,... ; Legrand's literary work took precedence over his missionary work.
