- Fulcher of Chartres, Latin Fulcherus Carnotensis, French Foucher de Chartres (born in or near Chartres, France, in 1059; died probably in Jerusalem in 1127) was a participant in and one of the most important chroniclers of the First Crusade (1096-1099). In 1096, Fulcher set off in the wake of Count Stephen of Blois-Chartres, traveling through southern France and northern Italy toward Rome in order to reach Constantinople, where the Crusader army was gathering. Fulcher traveled through Asia Minor with the Crusader army. After the conquest of Jerusalem in 1099, Fulcher followed Baldwin into the city. After Baldwin became King of Jerusalem in 1100, Fulcher moved to Jerusalem with his lord and probably remained Baldwin's chaplain until 1115. He then resigned from office and became a canon of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, where he probably devoted himself more to caring for the relic of the Cross, possibly even as its “treasurer” (thesaurus sancti sepulchri). Fulcher most likely died in the fall of 1127. (...) Fulcher began writing his chronicle "Historia Hierosolymitana" in late autumn 1100 at the earliest, or autumn 1101 at the latest, in a version that no longer survives today but must have reached Europe during his lifetime.
