- Antonio Beccadelli, known as Il Panormita (born Palermo, 1394 - died Naples, January 19, 1471), was an Italian poet, historian and writer, a leading exponent of Humanism. He was the founder in 1458, in Naples, of the Porticus Antonianus, now the Accademia Pontaniana, one of the very first academies founded in Europe, the first in the Kingdom of Naples and the oldest in Italy still in existence ; In Pavia he was given the teaching of eloquence, and here he wrote commentaries on Plautus' comedies and the Epistole Gallicae; he was also a poet at the court of Filippo Maria Visconti. Antonio Beccadelli (1394–1471), called Il Panormita (poetic form meaning "The Palermitan"), was an Italian poet, canon lawyer, scholar, diplomat, and chronicler. He generally wrote in Latin. Born in Palermo, he was the eldest son of the merchant Enrico di Vannino Beccadelli, who had played an active role in Sicilian politics, serving as Praetor of Palermo in 1393. He helped his father with his business until he became consumed with enthusiasm for humanistic studies.
