BD was born in May 1939 in Paris, France. Her parents came from Brest-Litovsk, Poland (now Belarus). Her mother was a dressmaker and her father helped her. When the war broke out they went to Vichy France. Her parents found work and farmers took them in. When it became too dangerous, they left for a village in the mountains. Deep snow prevented her father from walking. At the age of four, she was put into a religious institution. She came home every weekend. During the war she suffered from children's diseases especially scarlet fever. After the war she was naturalized. Two years later they left for the United States but they returned to France in 1951 and returned to the village in which she hid during the war. A woman called "Betty" recognized her; she was the daughter of the farmer who hid them.
