Children of Holocaust Survivors

SF, a Jerusalem resident, was born in Israel in 1950. She is the only child of Holocaust survivors from Bukovina. Her parents, both religously observant, had met and married after the war, both having lost their previous spouses and, in the father's case, his three young children during their deportation to Transnistria. Growing up in Kiryat Bialik, SF recalls a very happy, stable childhood, with her parents determined not to burden her with the pain of their past, which was hardly spoken about, but neither was it deliberately kept secret. SF was able to piece together their story mainly due to family photographs that had been preserved. She has contributed some of these pictures to the website of the World Organization of Bukovinian Jews and feels that she has helped to preserve their memory in so doing. Her parents were always supportive of her decisions, in spite of any misgivings they may have had - such as enlisting in the army or going away to university. SF has made two trips to Czernowitz and other towns in Bukovina Following her army service, SF received a degree in social work at Bar-Ilan University. After working for some years for the local authorities, she joined the permament army serving as a mental health officer. Her last position before retiring was as director of a hostel for the aged and infirm in Jerusalem. She is unmarried and leads a full and active life as a retiree.
