Children of Holocaust Survivors.
SF OHD interviewee
RecordingAM grew up as the eldest child in an affluent Orthodox family of five in Lodz, Poland. They had a Jewish nanny who lived with her family until the war broke out. In April 1940, her family was forced to move into the Lodz ghetto. Her family shared one room with her grandfather in the ghetto. AM continued her schooling to grade six through a school in the ghetto. There was a library next to her house, where AM spent a lot of time reading in order to forget her situation. Both of her parents were forced to work. Her father worked in the uniform factory because he was in the textile industry before the war. Ann eventually worked as an apprentice in the tailor shop of this factory. Her mother worked, for the first time of her life, in the laundry. In September 1942, all people over 65 and children under 10 were rounded up. AM's father was able to modify the ages of the two younger children to reflect an older age than they were. The children were spared, but her grandfather was taken away.
