In 2007, the National Library of Israel embarked on an ambitious journey of renewal, aiming to bring the institution into the 21st century. The goal was to make its vast collections more accessible, open its treasures to all, and foster a deeper connection with Jewish and Israeli cultural heritage.
This transformation, made possible with the support of Yad Hanadiv – the Rothschild Foundation, along with the generosity of David and Ruth Gottesman, reached its pinnacle in October 2023 with the inauguration of the Library’s new building, located between the Knesset and the Israel Museum.
Just over a year since its opening, the National Library has already become a cultural and architectural landmark, drawing thousands of visitors who come to experience its striking design, tranquil gardens, cutting-edge visitor center, unique exhibitions, and vibrant cultural programming. At its heart, the Library provides access to world-class collections, including rare manuscripts, books, photographs, and thousands of archives preserving the collective memory and heritage of communities from all faiths and backgrounds, both in Israel and across the Jewish world.
This week, Israel Post’s Philatelic Service issued a special series of three stamps featuring the Library’s reading halls and central staircase. Designed by Ranat Abudarham Dadon, the series incorporates stunning images of the Library’s iconic architecture, captured by photographer Aviad Bar Ness.
Oren Weinberg, Director General of the National Library of Israel, welcomed the initiative, stating:
"The Library building is an exceptional architectural gem in the Jerusalem landscape and a landmark in both Israeli and global architecture. It is therefore fitting and appropriate to commemorate this beautiful and inspiring institution on stamps—as a cultural and architectural symbol. We are grateful to Israel Post for this recognition."
David Laron, CEO of Israel Post, added:
"It is a great honor for us, on behalf of the Philatelic Service of Israel Post, to present the official stamps issued in tribute to the National Library of Israel—this treasure chest that preserves the written word, the story, the prayer, and the history of the People of the Book."
