Under the shadow of war and despite the difficult ongoing situation, the new National Library of Israel in Jerusalem's government precinct has now opened its doors to readers, scholars and the general public.
This isn't how we planned things to be, this is not how we imagined the opening of our new home.
But sometimes reality scuppers even the best-laid plans. Like all the people of Israel, we are currently in mourning, concerned for the safety of our soldiers and praying for the safe return of those kidnapped to Gaza. This is not the time for celebrations.
On Sunday, October 29 2023, after years of planning and expectation, we finally opened the new Library to the general public. This was done in quiet, humble fashion. Under the necessary limitations, our veteran readers were welcomed into our new building, along with some new faces who also came to visit our reading halls.
We'll leave the celebrations for better days that lie ahead. For now, we are happy to show you what this special day looked like through the camera lens.
