The National Library of Israel extends its deepest condolences to the Blumberg family on the passing of Haim David Blumberg, z"l.

Blumberg served as the first Chairman of the National Library of Israel Board of Directors.  A man of vision and action, he led the renewal of the Library as a home for Jewish and Israeli heritage, and as a leading, innovative center for culture, education, and research - both nationally and internationally.

“The traditional Jewish way of learning was noisy, and movement and noise characterized Jewish learning, as opposed to the stereotype of the shushing librarian and absolute silence. We must find a balance between the two.”

This was how the late David Blumberg, former Chairman of the National Library, saw his life’s project: the renewed National Library of Israel.

This was his mission and this was his vision: to open the Library’s gates to all. And it never mattered to him who came to visit and study – Jews, Arabs, religious or secular. He truly believed that the Library belongs to everyone.

We take comfort in the fact that David lived to see his dream become a reality.

May his memory be a blessing.
