Description This article examines the evolution of Holocaust perpetrator studies over fifty-five years (1970-2025) from the autobiographical perspective. Having emerged in fragmentary ways in the 1980s, perpetrator studies received a major impetus in the 1990s from the conflicting interpretations of Browning’s Ordinary Men and Daniel Goldhagen’s Hitler’s Willing Executioners concerning the motivations of ordinary German men in Reserve Police Battalion 101. Subsequently perpetrator studies have broadened to include many other issues, such as gender, morality and milieu, indoctrination, various occupations and professions, and non-Germans.
