| Description |
The present article focuses on the experiences of Israeli teachers called up for emergency reserve duty during the Iron Swords War. It analyzes these teachers’ transition from receiving the summons to reserve duty on October 7, 2023, through their reserve service and up to their return to school. The article seeks to understand the challenges these teachers face upon re-entering the classroom and to identify the reasons for this population’s perceived high vulnerability. Interviews with 48 subject teachers and homeroom teachers revealed their apprehension upon receiving the emergency call-up notice, as well as their grave concern for their families’ safety amidst missile attacks and sirens. Throughout their service, they experienced uncertainty regarding the duration of the war and their discharge dates. However, no dissonance was found between the teachers’ commitment to their families and their military units. They were celebrated as heroes upon re-entering civilian life but felt profoundly lonely and emotionally drained and tended to withdraw. These teachers felt caught up between the military and civilian cultures and struggled to teach, manage classroom discipline, and build resilience in their students. |
