Title A genealogical exploration of the Reher family, Jewish Bakers in Kingston, New York, 1880-1960.
Host Item Women in Judaism 15,2 (2018) 30 pp.
Description In the 19th and 20th centuries, many Jewish people left Eastern Europe for America to escape anti-Semitism and search for a new life. Frank Reher was one of these immigrants. He opened up a successful Jewish bakery in Kingston, New York, where there was a growing Jewish population. His story provides a case study of one family that developed an American identity, largely through socializing events in their synagogues, who also never lost touch with their Jewish identity. Using primary sources from the Reher family bakery archive along with primary sources from newspapers such as The Daily Freeman, it was feasible to construct a clear timeline of the family’s history along with shifts in their identity within the context of a newly developed Jewish immigrant settlement.
