| Description |
This article discusses the size of eggs mentioned in the classical halakhic sources (ke-beitzah). The article analyzes this issue in light of historical sources and archaeological finds from various periods, beginning with the end of the First Temple period and continuing with the period of the talmudic rabbis, the Middle Ages, and finally the modern period, with its cultivation of breeds of hens for laying eggs. This study shows that the size of eggs in ancient times was close to that of average eggs until the first half of the twentieth century, viz., approximately 40–44 cc. This is smaller than the measurement proposed by R. Abraham Hayim Naeh (approximately 57 cc.). All the extant data refute the notion that the size of average eggs decreased by approximately half and was about 100 cc. in Talmudic times, as suggested by R. Abraham Isaiah Karelitz (Hazon Ish). |
