Title Phonologie und Transkription des Syrischen.
Contributors Waltisberg, Michael
Host Item Zeitschrift der Deutschen Morgenländischen Gesellschaft 170 (2020) 19-46
Description One of the hitherto unsolved problems in Syriac studies is the lack of a generally accepted system of transcription. Similar to the situation in Iranian studies, this deficiency is not only due to ambiguities in the language and its writing system, but also to arbitrary decisions to transcribe, or to transliterate, or to make use of a hybrid form. In this article we are suggesting a new mode of transcription for Syriac, by pointing to the relevant linguistic features, in order to tackle the important issue of Syriac transcription anew.
