Over 1,500 Jewish volunteers from Palestine who served with the British armed forces were captured by the Germans as prisoners of war, the overwhelming majority in Greece and Crete during the spring of 1941. They spent the remainder of that year in temporary camps in Greece, along with the non-Jews (Arab Palestinian volunteers and British soldiers) who were captured. In 1942 they were all sent to permanent camps in Germany. The Jewish prisoners were sent to camps in Silesia, and were separated from the non-Jews. They were assigned to labor detachments, where they met Polish Jewish internees and learned about the persecution of the Jews in Poland. From the beginning of 1942 onwards, information regarding additional Jewish Palestinian soldiers imprisoned in various POW camps began to reach Palestine. Presents detailed descriptions of their harsh experiences up to the end of the war.
