Title The story of "Der Giftpilz" : teaching about antisemitism through a children's picture book.
Host Item PRISM
an Interdisciplinary Journal for Holocaust Educators 6 (2014) 52-57
Description Many Holocaust curricula avoid the topic of antisemitism, give only a simplistic ahistorical coverage of it, or subsume it under general rubrics like scapegoating, bigotry, prejudice, etc. Such an approach is methodologically wrong. Shows how a teacher can use the 18 drawings in the Nazi children's picture book "Der Giftpilz" (1938), as well as the stories accompanying each picture, to elucidate the main points of the Nazi anti-Jewish doctrine. The teacher should also explain the falsity and dangers of the Nazi anti-Jewish theories.
