Description Discusses the significance and roots of stereotypes concerning Jewish affinity to money. The stereotype of the Jew as moneylender has existed in the general conciousness since the Medieval period
it has appeared in schoolbooks and in literature, and has been associated with Jewish usury and the indebtedness of Christians to Jews. Argues that the stereotype of the Jewish moneylender is based on a misunderstanding of the ecclesiastic ban on usury, which under Pope Gratian became a dogma. Points out that not all Jews were moneylenders, and not all moneylenders were Jews. Emphasizes, also, the positive side of the situation, depicting the Jews as those who brought financial systems and capitalism to Europe, thus enabling the development of modern economies.
