Title Hugo Chávez's Jewish problem.
Host Item Commentary 126,1 (2008) 46-50
Description Chávez and his supporters believe that the Jews, especially those of Israel and the rich members of the minuscule Venezuelan Jewish community, are trying to dominate the world for themselves or for the USA. Since early 1999 there has been an unprecedented surge in antisemitism in Venezuela, involving publication of tracts in the government-owned media, vandalization of synagogues, and official raids on Jewish premises. Chávez has been influenced by the Argentinian Holocaust denier and radical populist rightwinger Norberto Ceresole. The government's scapegoating of Jews for its own failure to relieve economic inequity and local terror have led one-third of Venezuela's Jews to emigrate and left the remaining ones between fear of violence and hope for improvement.
