Description Focusing on the views of Holocaust researcher Esther Farbstein, discusses attitudes of the ultra-Orthodox in Israel toward the disaster. Hasidim, in particular, have had difficulty coping with the fact that most hasidic rabbis advised their followers to remain in Europe, and some rabbis escaped themselves escaped to other countries. Farbstein realized that the ultra-Orthodox preferred not to relate to the Holocaust because of possible negative effects on the faith of the younger generation, but she felt that there was a need for Holocaust study in that sector. In 1994 she opened the first course in Holocaust education at the Beis Yaakov teachers' seminary in Jerusalem and published the first ultra-Orthodox Holocaust research work, "Be-seter ra'am" ("Hidden in Thunder"), thereby breaking the taboo on the Holocaust. She has also worked with Yad Vashem on publications concerning Jewish religious life during the Holocaust. Yad Vashem's series "Shnot ra'inu ra'ah" ("Years wherein We Have Seen Evil"), begun in 2003, led to in increase in visits to the museum by ultra-Orthodox Jews, and teachers can study at a special department set up for ultra-Orthodox Holocaust study.
