Discusses student riots in the Transylvanian capital of the new Greater Romania, which had socioeconomic and national causes. The children of farmers who had become eligible for higher education faced competition from Jewish students: the proportion of the latter in Cluj's medical school was over 40%. Riots broke out when Jewish students, in accordance with Jewish religious law, refused to dissect Jewish bodies and Romanian students interpreted this as an insult. One demand of the rioting students was for the introduction of a "numerus clausus". Although this was not granted, the admission of Jewish students decreased. The student movement spread in the country. Two major interwar nationalistic organizations emerged from these events: the Legion of the Archangel Michael (later the Iron Guard) from the student radicals, and the National Christian Defense League from among professors and intellectuals who supported the students.
