Compares the American Jewish reaction to two film versions of the passion story: Cecil B. De Mille's of 1927 and Mel Gibson's of 2004. In the first case, the reaction was slow in coming and low key, reflecting concerns about stirring up antisemitism. Behind the scenes negotiations focused on requesting (only partly successfully) some changes to be made by de Mille, not on withdrawing the film. In contrast, at the start of the 21st century, American Jews and Jewish organizations reacted strongly from the start, even before the film's release. Despite Jewish reactions, Christian fundamentalist images of Jews urging the killing of Jesus remained in both films.
