| Description |
Describes the contradiction between the restrictive immigration laws in Uruguay during the 1930s and actual practice. While many Jewish refugees were turned back, many others, with the aid of bribes and bending of the laws by officials, found refuge in the country. In retrospect, these Jews saw Uruguay as a paradise for immigrants and denied any experience of antisemitism there. However, notes that the laws testified to antisemitism in the ruling political parties. The conservative press carried out an anti-immigration campaign with antisemitic implications. The bulletin of the German Jewish community called on its members not to make themselves conspicuous in public this would seem to point to a fear of arousing antisemitism. The Nazi Party, however, never gained much influence, and Nazism was repudiated altogether after the outbreak of the war.
