In September 1940, Begin was arrested in Vilna by the NKVD and detained in the Lukiškės Prison He was accused of being an "agent of British imperialism" and sentenced to eight years in a Soviet gulag camp. Begin was released after eight months, as were other Polish nationals, and joined the Anders Army, arriving in Eretz Israel in April 1942.
