Original Library/publisher FDR and the Holocaust. Edited by Verne W. Newton. New York: St. Martin's Press, 1996
The Bombing of Auschwitz
Should the Allies Have Attempted It? Ed. by Michael J. Neufeld and Michael Berenbaum. New York: St. Martin's Press, in association with the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, 2000
Host Item Journal of Military History 58,2 (1994) 233-266
Description A critical examination of the thesis of the possibility of bombing Auschwitz by the Allied forces in order to stop the annihilation of the Jewish inmates in 1944. Focuses on David S. Wyman's book "The Abandonment of the Jews" (1984), refuting his claim that the American authorities were apathetic bystanders to the Holocaust. Explores the military and strategic circumstances of a possible bombing of the camp, arguing that operational difficulties and risks, rather than prejudice or indifference, prevented the Allies from engaging in this action. Asserts that it is not possible to evaluate how much damage might have been inflicted on the gas chambers and how much of an effect the destruction would have had on the Final Solution. (From the Bibliography of the Vidal Sassoon International Center for the Study of Antisemitism - The Hebrew University of Jerusalem)
Appeared also in "FDR and the Holocaust" (1996), and in "The Bombing of Auschwitz
Should the Allies Have Attempted It?" (2000).
