| Description |
Delivered as a lecture at the University of Cincinnati, 1988. Presents a textual analysis of Celan's poem "Die Winzer" ("The Vintagers") and of the author's English translation. Contends that this poem, like most of Celan's work, bears witness to the Holocaust, even if the reference is not explicit. The vintagers are not poets, as has been thought, but they are Holocaust survivors who reap the grief of the tragic events they experienced. Asserts that Celan's use of repetition is his way of coping with the inadequacy of language - of the German language with its dark history - to speak the unspeakable.
