| Description |
Analyzes Marx's "Zur Judenfrage" (1843), stating that although Marx's antisemitism undoubtedly had roots in Jewish self-hate, it had a theoretical basis also. Marx's essay was a response to Bruno Bauer who held that the Jews could be emancipated politically by emancipating themselves - together with the Christians - from their religion. Marx saw the essence of Judaism not in religion but in economic power. Citing research by Henri Arvon, suggests that both Marx and Bauer were influenced by the "conceptual antisemitism" of Feuerbach, who (in the tradition of Lessing, Kant, and Hegel) contrasted the "egoistic" particularism of Judaism, concerned only with its own advantage, to the universalism of Christianity.
