Description The water-color painting "The Conversion of the Jews of Rome" (1829) by the Basel artist Hieronymus Hess shows Jews herded together in a church where a Dominican preacher is attempting to convert them. Hess often drew genre scenes of Jews in a mildly humoristic but inoffensive manner. Here, although Hess drew his first versions from life during a stay in Rome, the Jews resemble Basel citizens more than inhabitants of the Roman ghetto, and the monks and priests are satirized. In the context of the Catholic-Protestant conflict in Switzerland, Hess appears to identify his anticlericalism with the struggle for Jewish emancipation. In contrast, a lithograph of ca. 1850 on the same theme, by the Leipzig artist Friedrich August Fricke, represents the Jews as a repulsive mob.
