States that Niemöller, considered a hero of Protestant opposition to Nazism, was in fact an antisemite. Argues that anti-Jewish myths are essential to Christian theology. Most German Protestants endorsed the Nazi regime, influenced by Lutheran doctrine and their own extreme nationalism and antisemitism. They approved of discrimination, expropriation, and expulsion of the Jews, though not of racism or violence. Two-thirds of the German Protestants joined the racist Deutsche Christen. Even those who objected to Nazi interference with the Church viewed the persecution of Jews as divine punishment. Thus, Niemöller organized opposition to the Deutsche Christen and to the exclusion of Jewish converts, but failed to protest against antisemitism. Other Confessing Church leaders, like Barth and Bonhoeffer, also used Jews as models for evil. Analyzes an anti-Nazi sermon by Niemöller in August 1935 which repeated the myth of the accursed wandering Jew, compared the Nazis to Jews, and warned that they would suffer similar punishment for rejecting Christianity.
