The Construction Department of the Vilnius governorate board examined and approved civil construction projects in the governorate, issued permits for construction of various buildings, supervised the construction, and monitored the safety of the buildings. The collection includes documents regarding the construction and opening of synagogues and prayer houses in Vilnius at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. Inter alia, these documents allow researchers to study these processes and to learn about the obstacles that arose along the way. The materials include also graphic plans of the buildings --

In 1864, the reform of the bodies supervising the construction in the Russian Empire was proclaimed and following this the Construction Department of the Vilnius governorate board was established. The department mainly examined and approved civil construction projects, issued permits for various buildings, supervised construction in the governorate, and monitored the safety of the buildings. |
