The Vilnius Medical-Surgical Academy functioned as a higher education institution that trained medical, veterinary and pharmaceutical specialists from 1832-1842. The Academy was created as the replacement for several departments of the Imperial University of Vilnius which were closed according to the Tsar’s order following the Polish uprising of 1830-1831. Along with the Roman Catholic Spiritual Academy, it was subordinate to the Ministry of Interior Affairs. The collection contains some Jewish-related materials from 1820s-1830s: a file on the establishment of a pharmacy in Vilnius; records connected with admission and examination of Jewish students at the Vilnius Medical-Surgical Academy; documents on name changes; complaints against illegal medical practices; reports on pharmacy practices and certificates issued by the authorities for Jewish pharmacists --

The Vilnius Medical-Surgical Academy was established by the order of the Russian Emperor Nicholas I in 1832, after the closure of the Imperial University of Vilnius. It functioned as a higher education institution that trained medical, veterinary and pharmaceutical specialists. The duration of training ranged from three to five years. The Academy was created as the replacement for several departments of the Imperial University of Vilnius. Along with the Roman Catholic Spiritual Academy, it was subordinate to the Ministry of the Interior Affairs. About 700 people graduated from the Vilnius Medical-Surgical Academy, including 20 doctoral students in medicine. The Academy was closed in 1842. |
