Description
The collection contains seven Jewish-related files received and assembled from the Imperial University of Vilnius and the Vilnius Medical-Surgical Academy. These materials sheds light on the life of Jewish students and degree holders in Vilnius and in Imperial Russia. Two of the files of the present collection were initially assembled by the Board of the Imperial University of Vilnius (record 35 of 1825 and 172 of 1826, inventory 1). Record 35 (inventory 1, 1825) is a case regarding the establishment of a pharmacy in Vilnius. The case consists of a pharmacist's complaint to the Medical Board of Vilnius against another pharmacist and his request to establish a new pharmacy in Vilnius. Record 172 (inventory 1, 1826) contains complaints against illegal medical practices sent from the Lithuanian Vilnius Governorate to the Imperial University of Vilnius. Documents on illegal treatment are also included in record 1238 (inventory 1, 1833-1838). The remaining five files were received by the Vilnius Medical-Surgical Academy. For example, record 1120 (1833-1838) consists of reports and certificates on successful pharmacy practices issued by the Conference of the Vilnius Medical Surgical Academy, lists of medications prepared in the laboratory of the Vilnius Medical Surgical Academy for the pharmacist and the pharmacist's assistant degree, as well as a report on insufficient practical knowledge and a refusal to grant a degree. Furthermore, two files in the collection show the process of admission and the examination of Jewish students of the Vilnius Medical-Surgical Academy in order to get a degree (records from 1837-1841 and from 1833-1838). They include rules and regulations for the admission received by the President of the Vilnius Medical Surgical Academy, as well as requests to be admitted to write an exam. There are also documents on name changes.
